misfit pictures press release- notes from the underground...
Fall 2012/ Spring 2013
San Diego, CA.
misfit pictures has had an amazing year and we want to thank all of those who have
supported us. Since May 2011, our debut film MANUFACTURING STOKE has been
invited to over 20 international film festivals and has had another 35 screenings
worldwide. In addition to meeting some incredible people and sharing unforgettable
times, our film has received critical acclaim from festivals around the globe. Through
the festival support, we have secured several international distribution deals and now our film
can truly be seen anywhere.
So we are proud to announce our upcoming fall schedule of international film festivals:
Although MANUFACTURING STOKE is still strong on the international film festival
circuit, misfit pictures is pleased to announce that the final screening of our “World
Tour” will be taking place in our own backyard Friday, Sept. 7th. “It’s been an amazing
ride and an invaluable experience but we are all ready to get to work on our next film,”
says Kavanagh. “The good folks over at the Del Mar Shores Cinema Series have asked us
to headline their film series and we couldn’t be more proud to complete the tour at
home.” Producers Petra Kavanagh and Geoffrey Smart will be in attendance.
Coinciding on the coast of Maine, Grain Surfboards is conducting the 2nd Annual Surf
Re-Evolution event Sept. 8-9th and has invited misfit’s Pierce Michael Kavanagh to lend a
hand. Last year’s event kicked off the east coast tour of MANUFACTURING STOKE and
we had a great time watching our film on the side of a barn. This year, Pierce will
present a couple of films from the San Diego Surf Film Festival (Doug Walker’s Lost and
Found and Skye Walker’s The Escape) and moderate the guest speakers’ panel on
misfit pictures is pleased to announce our next feature film WHAT THE SEA GIVES ME.
This film highlights those with a life-long connection to the sea. Interviews include the
“world’s greatest oceanographer,” a great white shark researcher, an artist, a
photographer, a big wave surfer and many others with an explicable draw to the sea. This
ambitious film will connect all the seven seas seen through the eyes of the ocean’s
greatest ambassadors while raising global ocean awareness.
Kickstarter is the world’s largest funding platform for creative projects and we are
utilizing Kickstarter to raise funds for production. Our filming schedule is from
November 1- March 31st and we are seeking to raise $9,000 and become a community-
based project. Please tell your friends and family the Kickstarter campaign will run from
Sept. 7th- Oct. 10th and will feature some amazing Rewards from the filmmaking process.
Here is your chance to support something really special.
Project: WHAT THE SEA GIVES ME
In October, the SAN DIEGO SURF FILM FESTIVAL has been asked to bring some of
the stoke to the Boardroom International Surfboard Show and to curate the “Cinema
Grotto” Oct. 6-7th in Del Mar, CA. We are bringing aboard Cyrus Sutton and our friends
from KorduroyTV to co-present this truly special event that is honoring the legendary
Mark Richards. The “Cinema Grotto” will feature a dynamic array of the best short films
from the SDSFF, several new releases and a few surprises. In addition to prizes and
raffles, we will be conducting “Meet the Filmmaker” sessions from 12 noon to 2pm on
Saturday and Sunday. This is guaranteed to be a great time and we are really excited to
be working with The Boardroom and KorduroyTV.
May 2013, we will be presenting the SAN DIEGO SURF FILM FESTIVAL from May 8-
12th, from Bird’s Surf Shed. Due to the overwhelming response to last year’s sold out
inaugural festival; we added an extra day to this year’s event. Running from Wednesday
to Sunday, the SDSFF will feature over 35 of the finest independent surf films, live
music, the SDSFF Art Lounge, hands-on surfboard shaping demos, bodysurfing
expression sessions, beach clean-ups and of course, HOOTS AND SHAKAS.
Early Bird film submissions Oct. 1- Dec. 31st, 2012.
So as you can see, we have a very busy schedule over at misfit pictures and we couldn’t
be happier. Please join us in our quest for world domination.
